What did I know about North Macedonia?
Not much, maybe they made good feta. It is the type of country that feels like multiple counties in one. A train through the countryside reveals the peasant underbelly beneath Skopje’s gleam. Lake Ohrid’s beauty can hang with any wealthy getaway across Europe. The smaller towns in between have character and yes, great feta. It’s a country trying to establish its identity, maybe not totally knowing what it is suppose to be.
Come to North Macedonia and like most places, the less expectations you bring, the better. When you aren’t really looking is often when you find yourself most pleasantly surprised.
