  • What Kanna Is
  • Where It Comes From
  • Its Traditional Use
  • Its Benefits
  • Its Chemistry
  • Where You Can Get Kanna + Kanna Extract Co. Intro

What Is Kanna?

Kanna is a succulent found in the deserts of South Africa.

Kanna is an empathogen, and a true sacred plant, having been used in ceremony for thousands of years by the San and Khoi people.

Today, Kanna is most commonly used recreationally for its euphoric and empathogenic effects, and therapeutically for its anxiolytic and neurogenic benefits.

Where Does Kanna Come From?

Kanna comes from the desert region of South Africa known as the Karoo.

The Karoo is the most biodiverse desert on Earth. It is home to over 6000 different species of succulents. 200 species of birds, 90 species of reptiles, 75 species of mammals, and 70 species of scorpions!

Many of these species can only be found in the Karoo, including Wild Kanna.

What Is Kanna's Traditional Use?

Kanna is a sacred plant to the San and Khoi.

The plant is used ceremonially for rites and rituals, for inducing trance states and performing healings, and for social occasions.

Traditionally, Kanna is chewed or smoked after going through a fermentation process.

What Are The Benefits Of Kanna?

Kanna is non-toxic, non-addictive, and has proven efficacy in some of the most important aspects of health and wellbeing. Including:

Improving Mood and Mental Health
Relieving Stress and Anxiety
Improving Cognition and Memory
Facilitating Love and Connection
Improving Sleep

Kanna measurably enhances the function of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are closely associated with feelings of positivity, connection, and safety.

Kanna is a natural PDE4 Inhibitor — which provides both pro-cognitive and neuro-protective benefits.

Kanna is a powerful empathogen. When used intentionally Kanna can help facilitate intimate physical and emotional connection.

Kanna’s ability to calm the nervous system and upregulate serotonin function can have a significantly positive impact on restoring healthy sleep patterns.

What Is The Chemistry Of Kanna?

Mesembrine is the primary alkaloid found in Kanna.

Like THC for cannabis, or Psilocybin for mushrooms, Mesembrine is responsible for most of the measurable effects and benefits of Kanna, and is generally used to evaluate the potency of a Kanna product.

The effects of these Mesembrine alkaloids have been attributed to their SRA, SSRI, and PDE4 activity. Which are the modes of action of some of the most popular pharmaceuticals used to treat mental health issues.

Kanna is unique in that it lightly promotes these processes without the side effects often associated with chemical SSRI’s and similar medications.

Though caution is highly advised when working with prescription SSRIs or taking large doses of Kanna.
